FROM TAGS TO RICHES

Two years ago, a night out with friends led to a drunken bad decision which landed Tammy Connors not only in hot water, but on Tag. Despite having a curfew between 5.30pm and 5.30am for three months over summer, she never failed to be in high spirits. I talked with Tammy to find out how she didn’t let one bad decision affect the rest of her life.

How did you get yourself into the position of a curfew?

Being drunk and being influenced by the wrong sort of people.

What was your initial thought when the curfew was enforced?

The feeling was horrendous, I felt wounded. My emotions were all over the place.

Other than being legally punished, what repercussions did your actions have that you maybe wouldn’t have expected?

Not being able to socialise and working long hours became an issue. I couldn’t spend time with my nieces or nephews, taking them to the park or swimming was a massive problem because people would stare and talk. Also, having a criminal record now means I won’t be able to pursue my career as a carer any time soon.

How did you move forward once you realised there was nothing you could do about the curfew?

I kept myself occupied by starting projects like decorating my bedroom and starting my sister’s baby’s portfolio.

What positives have you taken from the situation?

That no matter how low I felt at that time in my life, I knew everything would go back to the way it was once those three months were finished and it has, I am happy and back to the normal me!

Do you have any advice for anyone who has made a decision in life that has had negative consequences?

Don’t over think the situation and only think negatively because once that period is over you will come out with such a positive attitude about everything you do. Don’t make a habit out of getting yourself into silly situations and walk away if you can. If you are feeling down about whatever it is you have done, take your own advice and learn from it.

While neither Tammy or myself condone any activity that results in a criminal offence, there are lessons to be learnt from those who do find themselves in situations that don’t reflect their usual character. Sometimes things happen that you can’t control, and the message here is that while you can’t always change what has happened in life, you can control the way you reflect and move forward. It is important not to let situations get on top of you and remember that there is nothing that you can’t come out the other end of.
